The Indian Navy is the maritime branch of the Indian Armed Forces and is responsible for protecting the country's maritime borders. It plays a vital role in ensuring India's security and sovereignty as well as supporting national interests in the maritime domain. Some key points about the Indian Navy are as follows:

Formation: The Indian Navy was established on 5 September 1612 by the East India Company. However, the modern Indian Navy was formed only after India gained independence in 1947.

Headquarters: The headquarters of the Indian Navy is located in New Delhi. The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) is the highest ranking officer and is responsible for the overall command and control of the Navy.

Motto: The motto of the Indian Navy is "Sham No Varuna", which translates to "May Varuna (Lord of the Oceans) be auspicious to us."

Protecting maritime interests: The primary role of the Indian Navy is to protect the maritime interests of the country and secure its maritime borders.

Power Projection: The Navy has power projection capabilities, including the ability to operate in distant waters and contribute to international maritime security.

Fleet: The Indian Navy has a diverse and modern fleet which includes aircraft carriers, submarines, surface combat ships, amphibious ships and maritime patrol aircraft. The Navy continues to modernize its fleet to meet emerging challenges.

Aircraft Carriers: India operates aircraft carriers, which are important for power projection. As per my last knowledge update in January 2022, INS Vikramaditya is the only operational aircraft carrier in the Indian Navy. The indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, was under construction.

Submarines: The Navy operates both nuclear-powered and conventional submarines, enhancing its underwater capabilities for strategic deterrence and maritime security.

International Cooperation: The Indian Navy engages in various international exercises and cooperation with navies around the world. These interactions contribute to mutual learning and promote goodwill.
